Well, to develop speed to play football well is pretty much different from developing speed say, for a track and field race. Why is this so? That’s because you have got to develop numerous sorts of speed rather than just running speed.
The kinds of speed you want to develop are:- Thinking speed You have to think fast on your feet ( joke not intended ) and attune to the mad speed of the game. Ways to feign a movement, how to make space, which position to run into, who to pass the ball to, to shoot or to dribbleetc. The flow of thoughts are limitless till the final whistle is blown. Thinking speed can be developed with a good soccer coach and by playing competitive soccer game frequently. You want to all of a sudden pick up speed very fast when your opponents are homing in on you. You can develop acceleration speed by developing strength in your whole lower body. All of your leg muscles including your glutes ( butt muscles ) are hired when you accelerate. Resistance training with squats, lunges, stiff legged dead lift and calf raises are necessary to develop power in your lower body. When your lower body muscles are robust, you may jump higher when you’re going for a heading.
Turning Speed When you dribble, turn and feign fast, you have got to have great body stableness and strength.
You can only turn fast and strongly if you have robust and stable central muscles. When you have physically developed these muscles well, joined with good ability coaching and staying power, you’ll be a heck of a speed devil on the soccer field.
