Six critical steps to prepare for a Career Fair

Standing out at a Job Faire can make a difference in your job hunt. Career Faires are starting to pick up, and Dice is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a San Jose Area Job Fair in early 2010, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 job fairs scheduled for 2010 across the US.

How do you stand out at a Job Faire? The rivalry can be sizeable, but you can help yourself stick out from the crowd with early preparation. At AA-Careers, we have a simple step-by-step process to get ready. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the organizations that are going and pick your targets. Use the internet to research the companies that are there beforehand. Go to their websites and see if they have their openings posted. Pick a sound number to target, and get ready to spend up to an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than 9 in a day, and four or five is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: executive names, recent news, and key product lines. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You’ll end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the hiring manager is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the requirements of the job. Make the nomenclature match. If the hiring organization calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The achievements should be written in the style of the hiring organization.

Third, create a ‘thumbnail sales pitch’ for each potential company/position combination. Write down a 60 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat out loud depicting why you are a special prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet the team from the company at the job stall.

Fourth, modify your resume for each opportunity. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re targeting. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the accomplishments and skills that most clearly match the job requirements. Especially at a Job Fair, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be simple to see that you’re a fit based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress nicely and be properly groomed. Don’t overdress (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, rehearse your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity – bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a intelligibly labeled folder. Keep them in a light briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

These sites were critical to my safety and energy starting a little while ago. And wanted to share these good websites with you. Are you looking for home security or some extra energy?

Tents

We went up to the mountains to camp a while ago. The back country is unrelenting and we wanted to hike several miles into the wild. It’s good thing we had a tiny bit of time to do some shopping. We needed a big tent. Paid extra for expedited shipping just in case. You never know what shipping will be like. We ended up having time to set up and inspect the tent when we got it. It was the right one! Shipping was expedited for 2 day delivery. The tent was here right on time for an awesome one week camping trip in the mountains! Absolutely exhilerating!

Home Security Systems

Wife required that I install a home security device before our vacation. Not only is it good to secure your computer and identity, all of that could crash if the house isn’t buttoned up. I don’t like to think somebody could steal our stuff. I hate the thought. Monitoring a security system is the way to go. It’s a tiny bit more expensive, but much safer we think. It felt good to have it installed the instant it was in. Ready for another vacation. Hooray!

eFusjon

Energy is required in large amounts for hiking, cooking, living in the wild. Efusjon saved us on this trip. It is totally worth the money. Everything we did while camping was so draining. I know I need to hit the gym when I get back but these drinks helped a lot. The ‘a’ team at efusjon is amazing. Very educational and the drink is energizing. You won’t regret joining the efusjon opportunity if you do. Go visit the link above and join already!

Check you later. Check out the links!

As time passes by, the world is becoming smaller and smaller as it progresses. The discovery of metal put several empires at the apex of their reign; for others it meant their destruction. When William Caxton introduced the printing press to England, it catalyzed the proliferation of communication on paper, changed the course of the planet, and caused the literacy rate to skyrocket. When Europeans conquered the Americas, they brought myriad innovations with them and formed trade routes between the Old World and the New World using galleons and other large vessels as message couriers. However one looks at the picture from different angles, the message is clear: technology and communication are intertwined.

As technology progresses, so do communications processes. Communications media is one of the aspects in the field of communications that has been improving greatly, enabling people to have access to information at an exponentially faster rate. Internet, satellite television, online social networks, instant messaging, video streaming, VOIP, and wireless news broadcasts are just a few of the many efficient mediums of communications media. If utilized fully, a company can stand to make enormous amounts of profits, especially in the global market. Also, one cannot ignore communication media’s major role in influencing various audiences on an international scale.

Communications media has changed the way people live. With so much information within reach and ready for diffusion by just a few taps on the phone or a few clicks on the mouse, people can connect, learn, and/or do business. And with practically millions of people connected in networks around the world, doing business on a much greater scale is relatively simplicity itself.

Secretary Spellings works with students at Ross Global Academy Charter School in New York City, where she announced an $8.3 million grant.
