<p>Matthew is the only one of the four gospels which brings up either the Star of Bethlehem or the magi. The Gospel of Mark, considered by modern-day text scholars to be the most historic of the Gospels, does not include a nativity narrative or any suggest that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The author of the Gospel of John also looks to be unaware of the Bethlehem nativity narratives. The Gospels often reported Jesus as &#8220;of Nazareth,&#8221; but never as &#8220;of Bethlehem&#8221;. Many scholars have reasoned that Jesus was plausibly born in Nazareth and that the nativity narratives are influenced by the desire of the Gospel writers to depict his birth as a fulfillment a prophecy in the Book of Micah concerning a Bethlehem birth.</p>
<p>Matthew&#8217;s description of the miracles and omens attending the birth of Jesus can be equated to stories bearing on the birth of Augustus, the first Roman emperor. Linking a birth to the first appearance of a star was reconciled with the standard belief each person&#8217;s life was united to a particular star. Magi and astronomical events were adjacent in the public mind by the visit to Rome of a delegation of magi at the time of a dramatic appearance of Halley&#8217;s Comet in AD 66.</p>
<p>There are legion other elements that bring to the puzzle, including the uncertainty in the sure date of Christ&#8217;s birth and the terminology used to describe celestial events during the Stars appearance some 20 centuries ago. For instance, any celestial object bright enough to attract attention was ready to be called a &#8220;star.&#8221; Meteors, for instance, were considered &#8220;shooting&#8221; or &#8220;falling &#8221; stars; comets were &#8220;hairy&#8221; stars; novae were &#8220;new&#8221; stars and planets were called &#8220;wandering&#8221; stars.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The actual &#8220;selection&#8221; process of survival of the fittest &#8212; natural selection &#8212;  is so severe, that only from one in ten to one in a hundred of those born survive to produce young. This  of variances affords ample scope for the selection of any variance necessary in order to alter the species in such a was as to bring the species into harmony with changes in conditions. This process of natural selection will be much more easy and certain if we look at how slowly land-surfaces and climates experience permanent changes. Such are the kind of transfers that create and reinforce alterations, first, it is most likely, in the distribution, and subsequently in the structure and habits of species. </p>
<p>We can extrapolate, then, thisutterly unavoidable conclusion from the facts: if natural selection can and does maintain every last continuously varying species in  adaptation to a stable environment, that it preserves the immutability of its typical condition. Almost every objector agrees with this viewpoint. In a slowly changing environment, the same phenomenon should unavoidably produce some related change is needed for the well-being and enduring survival of the various species who are subjected to those changed conditions.</p>
<p>I won&#8217;t include a further consideration of the dissents professed by critics of the theory. They have, I believe, been amply answered by Darwin and other evolutionary biologists. Some of the most recent have been hashed out in review articles such as the series I am presently posting. The word extinction is a more powerful word than natural selection, but what we really are talking about is the maladapted species who perish while those more adapted survive.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.evolutionminute.com/60-evohumor.html">evolution creationism controversy debate</a> has heightened in the last 20 years, and especially in the last 10. It is posing an unlucky diversion from our undertaking of the further refinement of knowledge, theory and understanding within the study of evolutionary biology. We in the scientific discipline are no doubt frustrated by this, and perhaps we find as a release valve for this frustration a good dose of wit on the sometimes ridiculous debate regarding evolution, creationism and intelligent design.</p>

<p>The prospects for mesothelioma patients have been grim, but doctors have recently made progress. Traditional treatments for cancer are surgery (removing the tumor and surrounding tissue), chemotherapy (poisoning cancerous cells) and radiation (killing cancer cells with radiation) There are problems with all three. Mesothelioma patients treated with traditional radiation therapy have not responded well to it. Researchers are looking for ways of aiming radiation directly at the tumor in hopes that this will result in less damage to healthy tissue.</p>
<p>The mesothelial tissue around the tumor is removed by surgery. This surgery is extensive and it is not clear how much the patient benefits. Common chemotherapy drugs that work on other types of cancer usually do not work on mesothelioma, and combinations of chemotherapy agents have been tried, but without much success. Like radiation, researchers are focusing their work on controlling the physical location of the treatment with an emphasis on the pleural cavity. </p>
<p>The high-mortality rate for mesothelioma patients means cutting-edge techniques for cancer are tried out. These techniques include a biologic therapy called the agent interleukin 2 and anti-angiogenesis drugs like thalidomide. The new drug pemetrexed (brand name Alimta) has shown good results in extending life with mesotheliomas..</p>
<p>Oncologists consider the stage of mesothelioma, the location of the tumor, the patient&#8217;s age and state of health at the time. Theres also photodynamic therapy and gene therapy &#8221; two far-out new ways of attacking cancer. Clinical trials using these techniques are being offered to some of those who have mesothelioma.</p>
